About imec-DistriNet

Celestijnenlaan200AThe imec-DistriNet research group is part of the Department of Computer Science at the KU Leuven and part of the imec High Impact Initiative Distributed Trust.. The general domain of expertise and innovation of DistriNet is the development of open, distributed object support platforms for advanced applications. The research is always application driven and is often conducted in close collaboration with industry.

imec-DistriNet was founded in 1984 and has built up experience and expertise in system software for distributed systems since. The research has expanded from pure distributed operating systems to support platforms for distributed applications. Currently the DistriNet group works on a wide range of problems involving computer networks, middleware, distributed systems, embedded systems, multi-agent systems, security and internet middleware.

ProgrammingThe work is application driven. This means that we start from a class of applications and their specific needs, for which we write concrete systems. The results obtained are generalized and applied to other concrete problems. This iterative strategy helps us to build and refine our systems. It is our belief that this application driven methodology has been the basis of our successful approach.

Programmingimec-DistriNet is involved in several regional and European projects. Experience has been gained in many application domains, often in close collaboration with industry. The know-how of imec-DistriNet is at the basis of Ubizen (now part of Verizon Business), a spin-off company that is specialized in secure e-business and related security services. In 2000, imec-DistriNet launched another spin-off company, called QMedit, that focuses on the development of workflow software for the healthcare. QMedit is now part of Agfa.
